Animals, Fjord, You Can See Everything

Movie 1: Animals

This is a very entertaining political thriller. Ben Affleck plays the Los Angeles mayoral candidate. His son is kidnapped adding to the drama. Toss in undocumented workers, rich vs poor, and you have a very timely drama. Kerry Washington as Affleck’s wife is very convincing. On Netflix.

Movie 2: Fjord

This is an intentionally slow family drama. A Romanian Muslim family moves to a remote Norwegian village. Trying to assimilate into the Nordic society they run into legal issues trying to discipline their children. This movie covers a wide range of emotional topics, ranging from child abuse to racism to religious persecution. As the viewer watches these circumstances unfold, we alternate between anger, shock and disbelief. Excellent acting and beautiful cinematography. While not for everyone, this is a very interesting societal study. In English, Norwegian and Romanian with English subtitles.

Movie 3: You Can See Everything

We saw this wildly popular documentary in a large theater with about 100 other people, most decades younger than us. Before going to prison a film crew follows the daily life of disgraced Silicon Valley founder of Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes and her family. We aren’t exactly sure why this movie was made, and we for sure don’t know why it is so popular. But it definitely has struck a cord with younger audiences. Nor do we know what that cord is. But the critics and audiences love this movie and it is getting plenty of Oscar buzz. We did find Amanda Seyfried interesting, but not exactly sure why she’s in the movie.
